The study analyzes the adaptation processes of rural migrants that are the members of the predominant ethnic groups of Khakassia, i.e. the Russian and Khakass people. An attempt is made to identify the reasons for difficult adaptation of the region's titular nation to the urban environment. The author conducts the social survey of people who have moved from the rural areas to urban settlements of Khakassia (405 Russians and 403 Khakass people). The survey shows that it is difficult for the Khakass people to get used to the urban lifestyle compared to the Russians; they are more likely to become manual workers and preserve their rural identity. The Khakass people meet the adaptation challenges because of their traditional rural lifestyle, national character (they are mostly introverts), and the awareness of their inequality in comparison to the Russians.
