Functional peculiarities of colloquial phraseology and paremiology in Yuri Trifonov’s novel The House on the Embankment

The article presents a functional and stylistic analysis of the use of phraseological and paremiological units in the literary texts of Yuri Trifonov. The relevance of the study is determined by the insuffi cient exploration of the writer’s idiostyle from the perspective of the functioning of stable linguistic units. The aim of the research is to identify patterns in the functioning of phraseological and paremiological constructions across different narrative registers. The study is grounded in a functional approach focused on examining linguistic units within the context of their actualization. Particular attention is paid to the classifi cation of functions of phraseological units, with an emphasis on their distribution across narrative levels. The novelty of the study lies in the interpretation of phraseological and paremiological constructions not only as elements of the lexical and phraseological level, but also as structural markers involved in constructing narrative perspective, expressing the author’s stance, and modeling communicative relations between narrative instances – namely, the author, narrator, and character. The study reveals a correlation between the frequency and stylistic character of the phraseological units and the type of narrative register: literary phraseology is mainly concentrated in the authorial discourse, while conversational constructions are prevalent in the speech of characters. Using one of the narrative categories as an example, the article demonstrates how conversational phraseology and paremiology function as a means of shaping the linguistic personality of a character. Special attention is given to the graphic highlighting of phraseological units as a way of emphasizing their textual functions. The study concludes that phraseological and paremiological expressions exhibit multifunctionality and play a signifi cant role in shaping the semantic dominants of the text.
