The relevance of studying the problems of functioning of the institute of mediation is determined by the need to identify various factors that hinder the effective development of this institution and identify promising ways and means of introducing appropriate practices in modern Russian society. The purpose of the study is to study the features of the institutionalization of mediation practices in Russia in combination with an analysis of the attitude towards them of various groups of the population of our country. The main results include the provisions according to which mediation procedures in Russia have not been widely used as an alternative method of resolving conflicts or disputes of a legal nature, which is manifested in a rather narrow set of areas of application of mediation practice in comparison with Western states. According to the conclusions made by the authors, the low prevalence of mediation in our country is due to objective and subjective factors, however, the institution of mediation in modern Russian society has significant potential for development, which is confirmed by both the willingness of citizens to seek the services of professional mediators in order to effectively resolve emerging conflicts, and dissatisfaction with court decisions taken in during the consideration of family and other legal disputes.
