Criminal punishment represents one of the most severe forms of state intervention against law violators and serves as an important tool of the legal system of any state. Its primary aim is to ensure public safety, penalize offenders, and protect the rights of victims. The conventionality of criminal punishment in Russia exhibits distinct characteristics influenced by historical, cultural, and legal factors. Despite the existence of certain rehabilitation and resocialization programs for offenders in the country, criminal punishment predominantly retains a repressive nature. However, recent developments within this social institution have indicated signs of liberalization. In the future, it is likely that criminal punishment in Russia will continue to evolve under the influence of various factors, including shifts in societal values, advancements in legal systems, and technological progress. It is also essential to consider the cultural and historical contexts, as well as the rights and interests of key stakeholders, including victims, offenders, and society as a whole. This interplay of factors underscores the complexity of the criminal justice system in Russia and highlights the need for ongoing discourse regarding the balance between punishment and rehabilitation in addressing crime and its societal implications.
