The article is devoted to the peculiarities of teaching adults a foreign language. The paper defines the concept of "adult student". And also their basic needs are given such as the desire to acquire new knowledge, self-esteem and the application of previously acquired life experience. In addition, the importance and role of adult motivation in the learning process is indicated. Motivation is considered as the main factor of successful learning and assimilation of the material. Setting short-term and long-term goals are mentioned. The analysis of the main principles and characteristics of adult students was carried out.
