Specifics of the representation of cultural realia in Julian Barnes' Novel “England, England”

The linguistic analysis of cultural realia, identifying the occurrence of individual types of cultural realia and determining their relevance for understanding the pragmatics of the work as a whole, is conducted based on the novel “England, England” by the English writer Julian Barnes. The relevance of the article stems from the fact that it is important for the translator to deeply understand how and why such non-equivalent and incompletely equivalent vocabulary as cultural realia are used by the authors in literary works. Scientifically, the novelty of the article is defined by the fact that this work of J. Barnes has never been subjected to a comprehensive study in the lexico-semantic aspect with reference to the functioning of cultural realia. The quantitative and content analysis of different types of cultural realia classified according to G.D. Tomakhin has been conducted. The conclusion has been made that the author uses ethnographical and onomastic realia most often, which, in their turn, are used for giving the national-cultural specificity to the text and contribute to the better understanding of the theme of authenticity, as one of the main themes in the Barnes's work. The practical significance of the study lies in the value of the data obtained for a deeper understanding of the work, as well as for the translation of non-equivalent and incompletely equivalent vocabulary in literature.
