The article, based on a comprehensive study, evaluation and generalization of judicial practice under Article 163 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, defines and examines modern problems arising while qualifying extortion committed with using information and telecommunications networks, including the Internet; the ways to resolve them are proposed. Attention is focused on the fact that with this criminal encroachment, such an additional object as personal relationships associated with non-material and non-property benefits: honor, dignity, business reputation, privacy, which affects the qualification of the deed, necessarily appears. Criteria for establishing such an objective feature of the composition of extortion as the reality of the threat transmitted through social networks and messengers are developed.
