Against the backdrop of active globalization and informatization of society, there is a need to train highly qualified specialists capable of successful functioning in the international labor market. In this regard, the need for integration of different approaches, of traditional and innovative methods of education also arises in the education system. Distance education is becoming the priority orientation of the modern educational process. The purpose of this study is to review the domestic and foreign experience of distance education in synchronic and diachronic aspects. The article analyzes the domestic and foreign experience of distance education, highlights its characteristic features, presents the basic principles of distance education. The analysis of the foreign and domestic experience of distance education shows that if it is organized in accordance with all the requirements, the effectiveness of the educational process in the distance format will be comparable to full-time education.
