The article examines the features of the development in Russia of the aggregate position of the country's residents towards law as a fundamental social regulator in a historical context. Here the attitude to law is understood as in the interaction of such phenomena as the ordinary legal consciousness of society and the mentality of the population. Scientific works are analyzed that examine the stated issues, relevant legal acts and other documents, including constitutional acts, party documents from the times of the Soviet Union, etc. It is noted that the legal consciousness of the inhabitants of Russia and their mentality show their fundamental historical stability, bearing in mind a significant component in the form of legal nihilism. The reasons for this trend are presented. At the same time, in post-Soviet Russia, a vector is emerging aimed at a more democratic development of society and a more responsible attitude of the population towards the laws adopted by the state, but it is not yet stable enough, and accordingly, the general direction of the attitude towards the law, bearing in mind the historical dynamics, still remains.
