The author synopsizes the history of translations and compilations of the books by D. Defoe and S. Richardson in Russian from the end of the XVIII с. to the beginning of the XX c. The choice of these authors is determined by the fact that the novels by these writers of Enlightenment were very popular among the Russian readers of the first half of the XIX century. An attempt is undertaken to explain why S.Richardson’s novels became less attractive despite a lot of compilations, while D. Defoe’s novel has attracted not only attention of children and teenagers but also of adults.
