The importance of art in identification processes is recognized in modern social and humanitarian knowledge. In this article, an attempt is made to look at the artistic space of the XX - beginning of the XXI century as a kind of field of intersection and collision of different identification processes and identify their main directions, reflecting the most important sociocultural transformations of the XX century. Firstly, it is the process of searching for the identity of art itself, which is end-to-end for the entire last century. Secondly, in this space, devoid of identification certainty and unambiguity, the Artist tries to fix his own identity by means of art itself. Finally, in modern artistic practices, the Spectators, whom the Artist put in an unexpected, stressful, shocking, destroying the established ideas about themselves, were also involved in these processes, thereby launching the processes of self-identification. To analyze the very ways of posing the problem of identity, art uses Locke's typology of identity (thing - body - personality).
