Patriotism in M.Yu. Lermontov’s Worldview: An Attempt at Historical and Philosophical Reconstruction

The article undertakes a historical-philosophical reconstruction of the concept of patriotism discernible from the creative legacy of M.Yu. Lermontov. Lermontov’s patriotism encompasses the following crucial components: 1) reverence for the history of his native country, 2) affection for Russian nature, 3) veneration and pride in Russian culture, 4) pride in and sorrow for the unrealized potential of talented Russian individuals. Concurrently, an irrational component is present in the poet’s patriotism, mirroring the nature of love itself. M.Yu. Lermontov simultaneously admires Russia and expresses discontent with its lamentable present, experiencing trepidation regarding the homeland’s future, cognisant of the iniquity inherent in the modern existence of his native land. The study employs the hermeneutic method as an interpretation and reconstruction of meanings, alongside comparative-historical analysis and philosophical comparativism.
