The study deals with the problem of higher education reforms in Russia. In the author’s opinion, the resistance to change from the traditionally conservative educational environment is one of the main challenges faced by the country in this process. The paper analyzes the concept of conservatism, investigates the origins of teaching staff conservatism, and reveals various aspects of this phenomenon. The research discusses the current trends in higher education in Russia and in the world (informatization, differentiation, pluralism, instrumentalization). Special attention is paid to the internationalization of education. This concept and its historical background are outlined. The research highlights the positive aspects of the phenomenon under review, its possible risks and ways to overcome them. University administrators are encouraged to establish good communication with the faculty concerning the true objectives of innovation; introduce innovation gradually providing teachers with instructional support and avoiding drastic measures (for example, dismissals of employees who fail to meet the requirements); focus on the positive aspects of internationalization.
