The article by Professor Archpriest Dumitru Stăniloae represents the first of two lectures he gave in Oxford in January 1969. The article is devoted to the Orthodox understanding of the doctrine of Tradition. The Romanian theologian examines the laws by which the theological language can be developed to meet the demands of modern times. Father Dumitru Stăniloae also raises the problem of purifying the theological language of non-Orthodox Christians from elements that do not correspond to Tradition. The compliance of the theological language of non-Orthodox Christians with Tradition of the Church is seen as an essential precondition for the potential rapprochement of the Churches.
