The article addresses the use of the competence approach as a tool of implementation of modern environmental education in higher professional education in the Russian Federation. Presents an analysis of the state educational standards in the sphere of ecological education. The characteristic of the practical aspects of the implementation of educational programs in the sphere of ecology and nature use in the Volgograd State University. The results of the comparative analysis of features of academic and applied bachelor in a direction "Ecology and nature use" showed the predominance of practical application of applied research. This is expressed, in particular, in the peculiarities of the educational process: the reduction of lectures, increase laboratory works, increase the length of practice, the active involvement of practitioners in the education of students. Selected key trends and prospects for the effective implementation of the educational program bachelor of applied taking into account the competence approach. They include changes in the structure of educational programs, development of cooperation with potential employers, organizing practices in production, the actual usage of educational technologies and others. Based on the analysis of statistical data for 2009-2014 shows the relationship between the implementation of a competence approach in education and effective employment of graduates.
