Objective. To study epidemiology of primary central nervous system tumors (CNS PT) in the Arkhangelsk region (AR) from 2000 to 2011. Materials and methods. Data on all CNS PT (C70-C72) in the AR in 2000-2011 were extracted from the database of the Arkhangelsk regional cancer registry. The incidence and mortality from CNS PT by sex, age, location, histological types was studied. Results. Over the period 2000-2011, 836 cases of the CNS PT were recorded in the AR. The median age of patients was 52 years. Only malignant tumors were recorded. Nine percent of all diagnosed cases were of age 0-19 years, and 91% belonged to the age group of 20+ years. The proportions of men and urban residents were 52% and 72%, respectively. The most frequent were the tumors of cerebral hemispheres (54%) and of neuroepithelial structure (74%). The proportions of astrocytic tumors were 43% and 62% in age periods 0-19 and 20 + years, respectively. The peak incidences of CNS PTs’ in general, and in tumors of the meninges were registered at the age of 60-69 years, while in neuroepithelial tumors - at the age 50-59 years. The standardized (world standard) incidence of CNS PT in AR increased from 5.61 per 100,000 in 2000 to 6.20 per 100,000 in 2011 among men. The corresponding numbers for women were 4.48 and 4.78. Standardized mortality rates for CNS PT in 2011 were 3.40 and 3.22 per 100 000 for men and women, respectively. Conclusion. The epidemiology of the CNS in the AR in 2000-11 is similar to what has been reported from other developed countries. The registration of benign CNS PT is warranted.
