Данная статья представляет собой комментарий и перевод письма № 33 KD византийского философа Михаила Пселла, адресованного его другу и учителю Иоанну Мавроподу. Рассматриваемое нами письмо было написано Пселлом после смерти брата корреспондента и последовавшего за этим событием примечательного явления - благоухания тела покойного. Пселл утверждает, что этот запах проистекает от души, которая получила его вместе с божественным миром, исходящим от Бога, и объясняет, как это сверхъестественное благоухание распространяется даже после исхода души. Пселл предполагает, что человеческое тело причастно не только земным первоэлементам, но и небесному эфироподобному элементу, из которого состоит логос человека. Умственный огонь, который очищает душу во время процесса разделения души с телом, сжигает все земные элементы, окружающие душу в теле, но оставляет невредимым несгораемое эфироподобное вещество логоса. Эта эфирная сущность, сохраняющая благоухание души, источает его вокруг себя после физической смерти.
