Actor’s training: M. A. Chekhov’s method

It is described in the article how to train an actor using the Chekhov’s system from a pedagogical point of view. The reasons which forced Chekhov to create his own training system are defined and the role of anthroposophy in his pedagogical views is described. The principles of rehearsal process which help to define the purpose and the conditions of the actor’s training are described on the basis of the M.A. Chekhov’s works. Chekhov developed a special set of exercises and training methods that help to identify the distinctive features of the Chekhov''s system in comparison with the Stanislavsky’s system. The main difference of their systems is the work with images. Stanislavsky’s image is the result of the whole work, and Chekhov’s one is reached with the daily work material. The dynamics of mastering the acting techniques (from simple to the most complicated) is traced in the exercise system proposed by Chekhov. His system helped to avoid ‘naturalism’ leading to psychological theatre, it was also easier and more convenient to use. Theatre groups get an important role in training process of acting in the Chekhov’s system because it is impossible to develop actor’s psychotechnics without any receptivity and interaction among the actor and the other actors. The analysis of the M. Chekhov’s system (touching upon actors’ training) proposed by the author of the article can be used in teaching practice of historical, pedagogical and cultural university disciplines.
