Eldi Kekteev’s Poem about War and a Pilot “Narma, Son of Darma”

The article examines for the first time the first Kalmyk poem about the Great Patriotic War “Darmin kövün Narm” (“Narma, son of Darma”), written by Eldey Kekteev (1916–1965) in 1941, dedicated to the Kalmyk fighter pilot Vasily Darmaev (1914–1942). The first version of the poem, published without dedication in May 1941 in the newspaper “Ulan Bakhchud” (“Red Youth”), told about the childhood and youth of the pilot on the eve of the war. It was continued by the second part in October 1941 in the magazine “Ulan Tug” (“Red Banner”) with a description of the pilot’s first battle on June 22, 1941. After the poet’s return to his homeland, the poem in the second version of two parts was published in the almanac “Teegin Gerl” (“Light in the Steppe”) in 1958. In the Russian translation by Igor Romanov, it was included in the author’s book “The Origins of Love” in 1959. This is the only poem addressed during his lifetime to the hero who died in 1942 while performing a combat mission near Bataysk. The heroic and romantic work of the poet, author of the first Kalmyk novel in verse, “Onchkhan Jirgal” (1941), conveys the historical traditions of defending the motherland by Kalmyk warriors, but in a new perspective – not on the ground, but in the sky, not in the saddle, but in an airplane, in the development of a military specialization previously unknown to nomads. Despite the fact that the first and last name of the pilot are indicated in the post– war dedication, the poet in the poem used a different name for his hero, Narma, thereby avoiding documentary. In describing the biography of the hero and the first battle, the author mainly adhered to the principle of historicism. The open ending of the poem corresponded to the events of the pilot’s life, who continued to defend the skies of his homeland. In the first version, the text is structured in quatrains, in the second version in two ways: in the first part as a single text, in the second part – in different stanzas with partial use of the “ladder”. In the poem, Kalmyk military vocabulary is associated with aviation, folklore vocabulary is associated with the heroic epic “Dzhangar”.
