The first publication of the archival article “Sex and Culture” by Sergey Nikolaevich Mareev, one of the founders of the “Ilyenkov school” in Russian philosophy, is proposed. Being a friend and pupil of E. V. Ilyenkov, Mareev studied and embodied in his research concrete historicism as the methodological basis of Marxist theory and social practice. In the article “Sex and culture” S. N. Mareev characterizes the uniqueness of the Marxist solution to the problem of sex and sexual inversions from the perspective of the social essence of human. In the early 90s, when sexual relativism began to be established as a social norm against the background of the total reform of Russian society, the author of the article demonstrates the non-triviality of the Marxist analysis of these issues, showing the difference between the “biological sex” and the “psychological sex” in humans. In contrast to the naturalistic interpretations of sex and sexual inversions within the framework of Freudianism, Mareev considers human sexual behavior as a derivative of the cultural world in its historical dimension.
