Problem and purpose. The article explores the boundaries of the field of vision of the observer in Bulgakov's fiction. Special attention is given to the structure, modification and conceptual variations of this field. The paper provides the analysis of visual imagery semantics both in mental and physical sense (dream, hallucination, delirium). The attention is focused on psychological and emotional processes inside the observer's mind. Important element of the study is the suicide motif as one of the main ways to implement the visual technique of imposing illusions. The methodology of the studyis a complex analysis of the figurative structure of the fiction - the “Notes of a Young Doctor”, “Notes on Cuffs” cycles, as well as “Theatrical Novel”. The generalization and application of the experience of research works by foreign and domestic scientists, recognized by scientific community is suggested. Results. Based on the structural-typological, cultural, philosophical approaches, the main elements of the field of vision of Bulgakov's observer are described. The issue of the key role of the visionary in the early works of M.A. Bulgakov is raised. Conclusion.A fundamentally important idea of looking into oneself is revealed, which gives reason to comprehend the author's visual techniques as the foundation on which he builds the text construct.
