Field study of the Orthodox burial grounds in Russian Lapland in the XIX–XXI centuries

Free access

The paper presents an overview of the results of archaeological and anthropological studies of Christian burial grounds of the XVII-XIX centuries in Russian Lapland over the past 150 years. More than 25 necropolises and individual burials were examined, including burial grounds in Varzuga, Kandalaksha, and Kovda. In the XXI century, the volume of published information on various aspects of Pomor funeral rituals has increased significantly, but the data remains fragmented, and currently this aspect of the spiritual culture of the region remains understudied. Funeral practices in the Kola Arctic corresponded to the all-Russian norms, with minor variations due to the specifics of the spiritual traditions of the ethnic groups of the region.
