The author studies the category “political identity”, as well as ontological and epistemological aspects of this concept. Based on the methodological guidelines of the neo-institutional approach, the author analyzes the transformation of ideas about the space of political being and the role of the concept of political identity within the boundaries of the sectoral idea of political being. The author focuses on the conflict paradigm of political existence, which took shape during the Middle Ages and evolved in the Modern era. The ontological idea of political identity as “I-rational”, formalizing belonging to the political community in the paradigm of the national state, according to the author has the greatest explanatory potential. It is noted that at the modern stage of transformation of the forms of political existence embodiment, formed under the influence of dialectically directed trends of glocalization, the established modern idea of political identity is eroded.
