The article is devoted to the one of the theories of democracy, namely the so-called participatory democracy appeared in Western political philosophy in the late 1960s and became particularly widespread in the 1970s. The author briefly formulates the essence of this theory, and then critically examines the views of some of its main representatives. A conclusion about the insufficient normative validity of participatory democracy in the papers of the authors under consideration is made. It is proposed to distinguish two directions within participatory democracy: liberal and republican. Thus, the article identifies common and special features, as well as shortcomings in the views of the main representatives of participatory democracy.
