The article examines the main powers of one of the highest constitutional bodies of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria - The Superior Council of Magistracy. The author analyzes the disciplinary and advisory powers, as well as the powers related to the management of the professional activities of magistrates, the protection of their rights and independence and considers the relevant provisions of the constitutions and constitutional amendments, organic laws and other legislative acts. The Superior Council of Magistracy in Algeria as a constitutional body has been envisaged at every stage of the country's development since independence in 1962, starting with the provisions of the first Constitution of 1963 and ending with the constitutional amendments of 2020, which made significant changes to the powers of the Council. These amendments were introduced as a result of constitutional reform, which affected, among other areas, the judiciary one. This was due to the political development of Algeria, which, since 2019, has seen protests and demonstrations demanding deep reforms, including the judicial sector.
