The article examines the causes and types of religious deviant phenomena. The analysis of the motivating causes of this phenomenon, their consequences and influence on the subject is carried out. To round out the study, the author uses an interdisciplinary approach, as well as religious-dogmatic, sociological, philosophical-ontological and religious methods. A comparative analysis of the concepts of “norms” and “deviation” in the field of fundamentalist religious movements over time is carried out. The conclusion is made that contemporary fundamentalist movements, which dominate traditional religious institutions, are deviant in several aspects. Moreover, contradictions in the interpretation of the concepts of “norm” and deviations from it in secular and religious communities are identified. As a result, it is noted that this situation, if it tends to intensify, will contribute to social tensions.
