Posttraumatic stress in mothers of adult children with acute newly-diagnosed mental disorder

Introduction. Families with the first manifested mental illness of a family member are exposed to a significant emotional impact, which can become psychoinjuring by its intensity. Mothers of adult children who provide care and attention may experience posttraumatic stress of different severity and associated psychopathological symptoms. Materials and methods. To diagnose PTSD the Mississippi scale was applied, civilian version (MS), Scale of assessment of the impact of the traumatic event (IES-R), the questionnaire of severity of psychopathological symptoms (SCL-90-R). The study involved 68 mothers, aged 39 to 70 years, exposed to stress - acute newly-diagnosed mental disorder of an adult child and the attending psychoeducational program on the basis of the Psychiatric Hospital No. 4 named after P.B. Gannushkin (psychoneurological dispensary No. 16). Results. The study of the level of post-traumatic stress and psychopathological symptoms of mothers who attended the psychoeducational program after the newly-diagnosed acute mental disorder of their adult children revealed an average with a tendency to a high level of post-traumatic stress and showed its relationship with psychopathological symptoms...
