Retranslating literary classics as an attempt to reinterpret them (based on translations by M. Nemtsov and A. Gryzunova)

Бесплатный доступ

It is commonly acknowledged that literary works should be retranslated from time to time so that they sound less archaic and closer to the original text through the latest translation strategies and techniques. However, translators’ efforts are not always appreciated by the Russian reading public. In the paper M. Nemtsov’s translation of ‘The Catcher In the Rye’ by J.D. Salinger and A. Gryzunova’s translation of ‘Wuthering Heights’ by Emily Bronte are analyzed. These versions are interesting because both translators were inspired and motivated by various faults and failures of the previous translations. That’s why it seems important to analyze and assess the versions from theoretical point of view to see whether the criticism they faced is justified.
