The article examines the history of legal regulation of women's military service. Despite the fact that Russia has been a constant participant in various campaigns and wars since its formation, the legal opportunity to participate in military conflicts was assigned to women only in the 20th century, which was facilitated by both external factors and the development of scientific and technological progress. Despite the fact that at the beginning of the 20th century women received the unhindered right to serve in the army by conscription, by the middle of the century there were many restrictions on this opportunity. Despite the fact that the historical material being studied relates to, albeit a legal predecessor, but still another state, it shows the attitude of society and the legislator towards the military service of women, and also historical experience makes it possible to understand whether those factors that allowed women to be equal to men have been preserved fight on the battlefields of the 20th century.
