The article examines the ideas of J.-J. Rousseau which have potential for their use in the educational process of modern elementary schools. Learning organized according to J.-J. Rousseau’s recommendations stimulates cognitive activity of elementary school students and helps develop their independent thinking skills and actively assimilate knowledge about the environment.
