The article considers teaching a foreign language in a multicultural context. Cultural diversity causes differences in perception and ways of learning a foreign language. Since everyone has the right to an equal education, it is essential that teachers avoid discrimination based on cultural background, language and ethnicity. Instead, they should instill tolerance and mutual respect in the classroom. This paper focuses on a detailed review of the literature based on the teacher's perception of their multicultural competence in teaching students of different social groups, cultures, nationalities, etc. In particular, a literature review was compiled based on the results of a study that looked at the gap between the increase in student diversity and the level of multicultural competence of university teachers, and examined in a qualitative case study. The results of the inductive data analysis showed that, in general, teachers realized the need for additional multicultural competence. They emphasized the importance of increasing awareness, knowledge and skills in working with different students. The literature review supports important components. For teachers of the university, pedagogical school, this kind of research aimed at the formation of multicultural competence is always important.
