A short review of the current status and perspectives in the development of coal-fired power generation in the Russian Federation is presented in this paper. Results of numerical modeling demonstrate that coal-fired power plants projects are currently less attractive for investors in comparison with gas-fired plants in the absence of regulatory incentives. The analytical approach used in the comparative analysis of these power generation technologies allows estimating required incentives to support the development of coal-fired generation in Russia.
