The article is devoted to comparative analysis of some short stories by Maughamand some ones by Chekhov. The problem of illusion and reality is central in thefollowing short stories: Mirage, The Outstation (W. S. Maugham); Krizhovnik, Che-lovek v futliare (A. P. Chekhov).
