Interpretation of Tess in the first Russian translation of Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the D'Urbervilles"

The paper analyzes interpretation of Tess in the first Russian translation of Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" issued in 1893. The comparative analysis shows that some conceptual features that are characteristic of Tess in the source text are lost or distorted in the translated text. It occurs due to the following: omission of some scenes, inadequate translation and bypassing of some metaphors and epithets describing the character and identifying the author's position relative to Tess.
