The is paper focused on the problem of attracting and retaining young teachers in schools in the context of a high demand for teachers. The relevance of the problem lies in the key role of teachers achieving the quality of education. Young teachers are the most active and receptive to innovation part of the teacher corps. The results of a study of factors affecting the attractiveness of work at school for graduates of higher education programmes and the success of professional adaptation of young teachers are presented. In addition to objective systemic factors, a number of subjective factors were identified, which are dependent on the conditions of the regional and school environment, as well as related to the level of professional competence of young teachers. The experience of solving the problem is described on the example of the Primorsky Territory. Particular attention is paid to the possible contribution of the university, which implements teacher education programmes, in solving the problem. The influence of changes in the organizational and pedagogical conditions of practical training of future teachers on the success of professional adaptation is displayed.
