The article analyzes the ontological aspects of the phenomenon of sex in the context of the radical transformations that have taken place in recent decades in biological ideas, which primarily relate to the understanding of the evolutionary nature of human behavior. These changes affect the conceptual apparatus of various disciplines, which are in a fairly wide spectrum: psychology, sociology, etc. The debate about the reality of sex is essentially a continuation of the millennial controversy about universals. The taxonomic approach to the understanding of sex allows us to analyze this problem in the tideway of philosophical discourse on the possibility of the existence of criteria for the generalization of classification groups. The author substantiates the impossibility of resolving this issue within the framework of the ideologemes imposed by postmodernism. As a variant of productive methodology, complementarity, understood in a general epistemological sense, is considered.
