The article is devoted to the problem of the East vs the West in the play Ceasar's Wife by W. S. Maugham. We conclude that the characters are "in between", belonging to the two worlds. Their connection with the East is determined by their sense of duty, while it is the West that influences their inner life. Besides, we analyse the musicality of the play. «The plaintive, guttural wailing of an Arab song» in the first act symbolizes future changes and sufferings. «The melancholy wail of a Bedouin love-song» in the end of the comedy means that Violet is free from her infatuation for Ronald.
