The article is devoted to the current issue of distance education. An analysis of the learning process of international students under the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic is presented. The aim of the study is to identify the characteristics of the academic adaptation of foreigners in conditions of self-isolation and the transition from full-time to distance learning. Academic adaptation is of particular importance when studying in Foreign higher education, since it is directly related to academic performance. The components of the organization of adaptation activities for foreign students are considered, and the main factors influencing its success are outlined. Also, the main factors influencing the success of the academic adaptation of Foreign students were identified. It is concluded that the process of academic adaptation involves not only the efforts of the educational environment, but also the efforts of the individual. In addition, it is determined that the academic adaptation of foreign students under conditions of the distance learning will be more effective if methods and technologies are developed that take into account the traditions of Russian education, the internal resources of educational institutions and the most effective external resources.
