The article deals with problems of organizing the work of internal affairs units arising in the process of searching for minors gone missing, as well as for those who abandoned their families or specialized state-run institutions. Considerable attention is paid to the improvement of legislative and interdepartmental regulation in the sphere of interaction between various subjects and participants in the initial stage of the search for underage persons. In the course of the analysis, the ways for improving this activity are determined.
