The article deals with the essence of piracy as a type of international crime involving the robbery, hijacking or destruction of a swimming vessel. The composite categories that make it possible to identify the crime as piracy are identified. The legal sources regulating the aspects of piracy are systematized. The problems that arise in the way of bringing pirates to legal responsibility are revealed.
