The presented article examines the main provisions of the student engagement theory, and the influence of student engagement on the results of learning English by students of a non-linguistic university. The role of the university, administration and teachers in the organization of the educational environment, contributing to the strengthening of student engagement in the educational process, is considered. The role of project activity (PA) as a high-impact educational practice combining components promoting student engagement is noted.
