The process of developing professional standards in the library and information sphere is considered. The article highlights the regulatory framework for professional standardization of the industry. A brief description of the draft professional standard "Specialist in the field of library and information activities" (2014) is given. The current stage of professional standardization is considered. Conceptual approaches to the development of the standard and the definition of its functional and content structure are analyzed. The expediency of the differentiated approach as the basis for the development of a line of professional standards, taking into account the multifunctionality of library and information activities, is justified. However, it is pointed out that the integrated approach will allow providing the industry with professional standards in a shorter period of time, with the representation of all the basic directions of library and information activities in its functional and content structure. The role of the professional standard as a tool for implementing the state personnel library policy is characterized.
