The article is devoted to the urgent problem of the competence-based approach in the modern education and in the formation of readiness of high school students for professional self-determination. The author considers the matters of the necessity of learners' competence and skill development related to the problems of professional choice or professional competence and highlights a number of competencies contributing to the formation of secondary school graduates’ readiness for professional self-determination.
