Analyzing an educational text as a means to examine readers' competence

Reader' competence depends on the quality of three basic skills: reading, writing and mental arithmetic's. It is the basis of functional literacy. Difficulties arising in the process of educational text understanding can be seen as an instrument to assess reader's competence which, in turn, specifies the level of functional literacy.
