The authors consider historical and pedagogical anthologies as a way of textual interpretation of the sources of the pedagogical past, paying attention to the fact that the search, selection, comparison and analysis of sources are carried out by the authors of anthologies at different levels of the presentation of the material. Anthologies on the history of pedagogy can be divided into several subgroups: anthologies of sources; critical anthologies; analytical anthologies. For the analysis of anthologies on the history of education of American teachers, E. Cubberly and P. Monroe, the problem of intellectual status and the mission of historical and pedagogical source studies was substantiated it initiated a broad methodological discussion, which has not subsided so far in the scientific community.
