The article deals with a numerous concepts for denotation the paratext of a dramatic work in Russian literary criticism. There are didaskalia, stage directions, a framework text, a subject sphere in drama, forms of authorial presence among them. The use of the term “paratext” instead of the others definitions not only a description of formal structure of the work by dividing it into text and behind-text elements, but also the correlation between the two components, and the purpose of their interaction is the impact on the recipient. In the context of Turgenev’s dramaturgy it was given more detailed coverage of the paratext of the plays “Bezdenezhye” (Lack of Money), “Kholostyak” (Bachelor) and “Nahlebnik” (Sponger). The remarks of the stage design of these and other plays, the lists of actors and the nomination of the characters before the replicas are analyzed and correlated. It is concluded that the text of the replicas and the paratext are connected. The concept of the frame in this case is not entirely successful, it can be applied on condition of the structural complexity of this frame which elements interact with each other, as well as with the framed text. As a result of consideration of scientific as well as practical material, a conclusion is made about the preference of the term paratext, since it does not contain the connotation of delimitation, but emphasizes the homogeneity and interaction of extra text elements with the text of drama. This is causes the narrowing of the concept of the dramatic frame, previously correlated with paratext, to the frame function of paratext, which is topical along with informative, structure-forming, metatextual, appraisal and other functions.
