Статья посвящена одному из методов манипуляций с фотографическими изображениями, обозначившему перевод реалистического языка медиума на язык художественной образности. Соляризация или эффект Сабатье стал одним из способов развеществления натурализма и попыткой выйти за пределы документальности. Американский фотограф и художник Ман Рэй в 1930-е годы создал ряд работ, используя соляризацию в качестве осознанного художественного метода. Технологический прием, примененный Рэем и более ранними авторами с целью поиска новой эстетической выразительности, в конечном счете, привел к модернистской его апроприации. Соляризованные отпечатки стали знаками сюрреалистической метафоры Ман Рэя, известного в парижских кругах художника и фотографа, преуспевшего в том числе в коммерческой сфере фотографирования. Исследование ставит своей целью оценить статус фотографии как материала художественных практик, в том числе сюрреалистических.
