The article reviews the role and development of the short story genre in the literary process of one of the Russian national republics. On the example of the only literary and artistic magazine in Buryatia, the author examines the stories by Russian and Buryat Russianspeaking writers published in the 2010s. The most characteristic forms of small prose are highlighted: story-recollection ("The Second Autumn" by A. Erbaktanov, "Pines of My Memory" by D. Sambuyeva-Bashkueva), lyrical story-monologue (B. Molonov), "events from life" stories (T. Grigorieva), stories-dialogues, story in story (Yu. Izvekov). The author analyzes one of the tendencies in the development of the genre, which is especially clearly manifested in the stories by Yu. Izvekov from the book "Box of Matches", published in different years in the "Baikal" magazine. They are a synthesis of non-fiction prose and fiction-based narrative, where the autobiographical plot nevertheless recreates the deliberately built, fictional character of the narrator-hero. The conclusion is made about the genre unity of the stories, which can be seen in the depiction of the hero's selfknowledge process, with the hero as a creative personality, identical to the personality of the author.
