The narrator in reduplication in L. Aragon’s novel “La mise a mort”

The article analyzes, through the concept of reduplication, the transformation of the narrator in the course of a diegetically presented reading. The reduplication, rather than the French mise en abyme, is chosen due to the rigor of the concept presented by L. Dдllenbach as a narrative figure of analogical doubling, by an embedded fragment, at the level of story or discourse. The choice of L. Aragon’s “La Mise a Mort” is explained by a combination of both types of doubling: the analogy of the murder theme between the embedded narrative “Oedipus” and its frame (story) and the projection of reading “Oedipus” (discourse). The interaction of narrative instances and the embedded fragment in reduplication has not yet been studied. In this regard, research states the functionality of the reduplication of story towards the changing position of the narrator-writer, using “Oedipus” to reflect on murder. In order to identify the transformation of the narrator in his interaction with the embedded narrative, the murder theme is analyzed at different stages of reading. It is concluded that the reading of “Oedipus” evokes the narrator’s writing role. He formulates differences in relation to framing (murder as a letter, the combination of a writer and a murderer), which represent new meanings and define the interaction of the narrator with “Oedipus” as an interpretative one, copying the function of a real reader. The interpretative generation of meaning has also a plot-personal function of resolving the narrator’s conflict by a metaphorical perception of murder. Finally, the narrator, combining story and discourse, contributes to the interweaving of the two types of reduplication, allowing to further explore it synthetically.
