This article proposes a methodology for quantitatively assessing the impact of artificial intelligence systems on the energy efficiency of pulp and paper mill wastewater treatment facilities. The methodology is based on the calculation of two comparable indices: a physical production index for wastewater treatment facilities, reflecting the benchmark energy consumption using best available technologies, and an energy efficiency index for wastewater treatment facilities, defined as the ratio of benchmark costs to actual costs. This methodology allows not only to monitor the current energy efficiency of wastewater treatment facilities but also to clearly determine the contribution of artificial intelligence systems to improving it relative to the technological benchmark. This enables objectively justifying investments in digital modernization aimed at optimizing the most energy-intensive wastewater treatment systems in the pulp and paperindustry. The novelty of the study lies in the development of a systematic approach that translates qualitative statements about the benefits of artificial intelligence into precise quantitative measurement. The practical significance and feasibility of the methodology have been confirmed by testing it on a typical pulp and paper mill model with a complex technological cycle. Thus, the proposed methodology is a tool for the feasibility study of digitalization projects aimed at improving economic and environmental efficiency as a basis for sustainable development of the industry.
